The name MITRA is drawn from the Sanskrit word meaning 'FRIEND' - a person with whom one has a bond of mutual affection and companionship. This name encapsulates the organization's founding philosophy: that sustainable change is possible only when organizations stand in genuine solidarity with the communities they serve.

 

MITRA was established as a non-governmental organization registered under the Societies Registration Act, XXI of 1860 on . It was conceived as a centre for people's social forum and as a resource centre for research, documentation, dialogue, policy analysis, and interventions that support people's knowledge and publications.

 

The organization emerged from the recognition that there exists a significant gap between marginalized communities — particularly Persons with Disabilities — and the social, political, and institutional representatives who are meant to serve them. MITRA was founded to bridge this gap through constant research, training, and action at the grassroots level.
